Now, on to other things, let's see. Isn't it amusing how when you are younger things can seem so boring, then all of a sudden at a different age they arent?
I have been devouring books on Pirates, "Under the Black Flag", "Encyclopedia of Pirates" "The History of the pirates" and so on...to many to count. In any case, I am very proud of myself, to be able to tell the difference between a privateer and a bucaneer, and a sloop and a galleon, and to be able to point out the mizzenmast on a ship. So in short, myself and my boyfriend decided to escape for a day on Monday and go to St. Augustine, that's about a hour from me. We decided to take the whole day and just lolly-gag about.
To put this in perspective St Augustine is the oldest city in the U.S., ancient actually by our standards, it was founded by the Spanish in 1565. it is home to Castillo De San Marcos, the oldest and largest stone fort in the continental U.S., it is also home to legends of Pirates, and privateers, and ghosts, and such things. The last time I went there, I was 11....I was bored, only interested in the candy shop, and I wanted to go HOME.
This time we got there early, around 11:00 and it was a BEAUTIFUL day, we went first to Ripley's Believe it or Not museum, good fun indeed. Then we puttered about in all the old shops and stores getting treats liek rock candy and caramel apples. It was so beautiful, ancient houses, so many beautiful buildings and secret gardens everywhere, plus the river right across the road. I wasnt bored, and I was shocked.
BUT THE BEST PART was the ghost tour, my boyfriend surprised me with tickets, so at 8:00 we are standing outside and I realize what he's done, because here come two guys dressed in PIRATE CLOTHES with lanterns, I jumped for joy, and immediatley screamed "PIRATES" and went bounding over to the two guys to have my picture taken! They obliged, then we set off. You see basically for a hour and a half, one guy, dressed in pirate gear, and armed with a 17th century lantern walks a group around the entire historic district and stops at certain places like inns, the fort, graveyards, gardens and tells you the ghost stories originating from those places. Everything from rumrunners, to a guy walking into mist to never return, to children ghosts and so on, all of them rooted in truth. IT WAS AMAZING, the guy did so well, he was around my age.....all I oculd think was I WANT YOUR JOB! This guy gets PAYED to dress as a pirate and tell people ghost stories, I was so jealous!
It's a lovley city though, piate garb is COMMON as are whole groups of pirates in bars singing sea shanties.....It was beautiful, it really was, there was magic in the air, well and truly. We are going back for a actual overnight vacation in July......
It's just so funny how places liek that suddenly seem more interesting when you are oder, but yes, my love for pirates is growing, and growing...also thanks in part to BECKERS making me watch Perter Pan, I mean Jason Isaacs as Captain Hook! ACK!~Falls over and dies~ SO PERFECT!
I am sad gathering is postponed till 2006 but so be it, all the more time to make costumes! BWHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA!
I realize this is a short entry, but more to come later!
